English Language A-Level at Nunthorpe Academy

Course description

Why choose English Language?

English Language is a subject which is exceptionally well received by universities and employers alike. Good performance at A level provides a very sound base for a surprising number of degrees and professions and helps to develop analytical as well as creative skills.

What does the course involve?

Throughout the first year, students learn to understand the role of language within the three specific social contexts. These are Power, Gender and Technology. Analysing the impact which social change throughout history has had upon language, is a fundamental aspect of the course at AS level.

Students also learn to write creatively and how to adapt their writing to suit different purposes and audiences.

In Year 13 we study how children acquire language and how language has changed over time. Students also apply their knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts to an academic investigation of their own choosing.

Entry requirements
