Dental Technology Level 3 at Sheffield College
This is a two year full time course
About the course
Dental Technology is the theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of oral and facial rehabilitation appliances and prostheses, their fabrication and function. This course leads to a recognised General Dental Council approved qualification. If
you are successful you will be able to register with the G.D.C. and carry out the profession of Dental Technician.
The course leads directly to employment and is the basic qualification required for employment in Dental Technology. The course is taught by experienced, qualified and G.D.C. Registered Dental Technology Tutors in a fully equipped dental technology laboratory.
Students study the principles and practical techniques of making appliances in the three primary areas of:-
- prosthetics – full and partial dentures
- orthodontics – straightening and repositioning teeth, using braces
- fixed prosthodontics – restoration of natural teeth, using crowns and bridge work.
In addition you will study associated areas of dental anatomy, dental biomaterial science, dental radiography, first aid, law and ethics.
In year 1 you will study two full days per week in college. Year 2 consists of two full days in college and two days work placement throughout the year.
The college will normally arrange suitable work placements with dental laboratories in the surrounding area. You can arrange your own work placement but the college will need to visit and approve the laboratory providing the placement.

Where can it lead?
Most students will go straight into employment as dental technicians.
Dental technology is a recognised area of shortage with less than 5,000 technicians currently on the G.D.C register. In the past the majority of students successfully completing the course have secured employment in the profession, usually at the laboratory where they undertook their work placement.
Students with good grades can apply to university to study dental therapy, dental technology or other related subjects at degree/HND level.
Why not come and see for yourself. Visit us on one of our open evenings and meet the people who will be teaching you, have a chat about what the course involves and look round our fantastic facilities where you’ll be learning.
