Business Studies A Level at Highfields School

Course description

This course builds a student's understanding of how a business operates and is impacted by its environment whilst enabling them to appreciate the importance of being more aware of the world of enterprise for their future careers.

The staff in the department have experience of teaching a wide range of Business subjects. The Business Studies department have a proven track record of results in both academic and vocational subjects and have prepared many students for successful applications to study for higher level Business qualification beyuonf our Sixth Form.

Course content

This subject will help you to develop anunderstanding of businesses and the markets they serve, using a problem solving approach. Business Studies allows you to learn about the key functionsof business organisations including Finance,Marketing, People Management and Operations Management and also the key external constraints that businesses face in the modern economy.

A Level Business Studies is a two year course however students will still be able to study for the new AS Level as a separate stand-alone qualification in 2016 onwards. The knowledge, content and skills developed from the AS qualification will enable students to prepare ffor the new A level qualification in 2017.

Students learn through a range of different methods including group tasks, independent study, presentations, essays and case analysis. The core assess,ent on the course is based around the use of case study scenarios and the application of business and management theories.

The finance element of the course requires the use of some mathematical formulae however this would not prove a hindrance to a student achieving a grade C in Maths at GCSE.

Entry requirements

In addition to the normal Sixth-Formentrance requirements to study AS/A levelBusiness you must have a grade minimum ofa grade C in GCSE English and Maths andat least a grade C if you have studied arelevant GCSE such as Business Studies.

Future opportunities

The Business Studies staff at Highfields are vastly experienced in teaching the AS and A Level. This leads to strong results and achievements of the students. Students also have access to electronic journals, the departments own sucject webpages and links with previous students whom have succeeded at University.

Further information

Business students have achieved excellent results in both GCE AS and A Level over many years. It is common for many of the students studying business studies to progress onto degrees in Management or Business at University.
