English Language A Level at Benfield School

Course description

If you choose to study English Language you will learn how and why we use language and the impact this has on others, how our language is affected by many different social factors, such as upbringing, friends, attitudes, values, culture and the media and how texts use language in different ways depending on their genre, audience and purpose.

Course content

Studying English Language gives students the opportunity to learn how language is used in different social contents and situations, how and why language has changed over the years and how we use language now compared to previous centuries.  You will aso get the opportunity to learn about the impact of media and technology on our language, how to write creatively for different genres, audiences and purposes and how to investigate a unique aspect of language, which holds personal interest.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to study English at University or specific English related degrees such as Creative Writing, Journalism and Sociolinguistics.  English Language is a good choice of course if you are considering a career in Broadcast or Print Journalism, Publishing, Creative Writing, Advertising and Language Study.
