Course description

This is a popular course which is very useful combined with other related A Levels, and is a good stepping stone onto a degree course orinto a related career pathway.

Unit 4 - Rings, Polymers and Analysis

  • Polymer chemistry

  • Analysis or organic compounds

Unit 5 - Equilibria, Energetics and Elements

  • Rates of Reaction
  • Equilibria
  • Energetics
  • Energy
  • Transition Metals
  • Transition Elements

Unit 6 - Practical Skills in Chemistry

This unit is broken down into 3 skill assessment areas:

  • Qualitative Chemistry
  • Quantitative Chemistry
  • Evaluative Chemistry

Entry requirements

Students must have successfully completed the AS Chemistry course with a minimum grade E.


Half of the assessment comes from the AS Chemistry Grade.

Students will be assessed through two modular examinations in each year, plus a coursework unit:

A2 examinations will take place in June of Year 13


Future opportunities

Students taking this course will be able to progress into higher education for example Biomedical science, colour chemistry, medicine, forensics, pharmacy and veterinary science.
