Course description

This course is for students who are interested in becoming a bricklayer and working within the construction industry. It has been designed to develop your practical skills, whilst still covering the theory of the construction industry in general.

Course content

If you want a career in bricklaying or masonry work, this course is for you. The structure of the course combines practical workshops and valuable theory which provides the underpinning knowledge required to increase your quality of work and performance.

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to carry out safe working practices in construction to:
      - Sourcing relevant safety information and using the relevant safety procedures at work.
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to interpret information, determine quantities and communicate with other in relation to:
      - Processes for disseminating information.
      - Basic concepts of effective communication.
  • Knowledge of construction technology
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to carry out safe working practices in construction to:
      - Sourcing relevant safety information and using the relevant safety procedures at work.
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to interpret information, determine quantities and communicate with other in relation to:
      - Processes for disseminating information.
      - Basic concepts of effective communication.
  • Knowledge of construction technology
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge of building methods and construction technology in relation to understanding the basic principles of:
      - foundation construction
      - floor construction
      - wall construction
      - roof construction
      - supply of utilities and services
      - sustainability within construction.
  • Construct block walling
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct block walling in relation to:
      - interpreting and understanding information.
      - setting out to line.
      - constructing block walls to the recommended height.
  • Construct brick walling
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct cavity walling in relation to:
      - interpreting and understanding information.
      - setting out to line.
      - constructing cavity walls.
  • Construct cavity walling
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct cavity walling in relation to:
      - interpreting and understanding information
      - setting out to line
      - constructing cavity walls.
  • Setting out for basic masonry structures
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to set out and construct masonry structures in relation to:
      - interpreting and understanding information
      - setting out basic masonry structures
      - constructing masonry structures.
  • Mix construction materials
    • The aim of this unit is to illustrate the skills, knowledge and understanding required to be deemed trained to mix construction materials in relation to:
      - gauging and mixing different types of construction materials.

Entry requirements

A minimum of GCSE English and maths at 1 or above or equivalent.

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the course, including practical synopsis assessment and a global online assessment (GOLA) test towards the end of the course.

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

Future opportunities

Diploma in Brickwork level 2 or an Apprenticeship if you have a suitable job.
