Extended Project Qualification at Caroline Chisholm School

Course description

The Extended Project is a course which can be taken as a free‐standing qualification, equivalent to an AS level.

The Extended Project allows students a free project choice, so they can explore in depth an aspect of a subject they are studying, or a topic in which they have a personal interest. The topic is chosen by the student and agreed with the student’s teacher, who then acts as his or her supervisor for the duration of the project. The
student has to show that they can plan, deliver and present an extended piece of work. The Project entails extensive research and production of:
- A production log recording stages of the Project.
- Either a 5000 word research report or an artefact (piece of art, sculpture, film, CD, DVD, video, journal,) plus a 1500 – 2000 word report.
- A 10 – 15 minute presentation to a non‐specialist audience.

Entry requirements

GCSE English Language or Literature: Grade 5 is required

Teaching will comprise a range of whole class and one‐to‐one discussion, on‐line tutorials and extensive research opportunities. This will be enriched by close associations with the University of Northampton Library; students following the Extended Project will have the opportunity to engage in an induction visit to the Library with associate membership.

Future opportunities

The Extended Project is recognised by universities as having equivalence to AS qualifications. It carries the same number of UCAS points as an AS in any other subject. Universities and employers alike recognise the qualification and rank it highly due to the degree of student‐led, independent learning and development of skills which the Project entails. Some universities are making reduced offers to students who present with an EPQ.
