English Literature A Level at Ponteland Community High School

Course description


For students who enjoy considering literature and the issues that are found within it 

For students who have a love of English literature in all its forms: poetry, prose and drama

For students who enjoy reading widely and critically

Course content

Paper 1 : (40% of overall mark) Students study three texts for the exam: One Shakespeare play from: Othello, The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure, The Winter’s Tale One Prose text from : Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Awakening, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, The Great Gatsby, A Room with a View, Rebecca, Atonement. Choice from two AQA Anthologies of Love Poetry through the Ages

Paper 2: (40%) Students study three texts for the exam: - One poetry text - One prose text - One drama text Poetry from : Feminine Gospels, Skirrid Hill, Birthday Letters, Ariel, Seamus Heaney New Selected Poems. Prose from: The Handmaid’s Tale, Waterland, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The God of Small Things, The Help, The Color Purple, Oranges are not the Only Fruit, Revolutionary Road. Drama from: Translations, All My Sons, Our Country’s Good, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Top Girls, A Streetcar Named Desire..

Coursework element: (20% ) One extended comparative essay on two texts of your choice

Entry requirements

5 A* - C GCSEs including B in English Language AND Literature


Two written examinations - worth 80% of your A Level

One coursework essay of 2500 words - worth 20% of your A Level
