Religion, Philosophy and Ethics A Level at The Hazeley Academy

Course description

This will be the first teaching of a brand new specification which will take aspects from multiple areas of Philosophy to create a dynamic and challenging specification. At the Hazeley Academy we will be teaching the 2-year linear A Level with all examinations at the end of year 13 as this will give you the best opportunity to develop your skills.

During the A Level you will focus on 3 different topics, each with their own focus. The 3 topics are:

  1. Philosophy of Religion which will include: Ancient Greek Philosophy, arguments over God’s existence, religious experience, miracles, the challenge of evil, the mind and soul problem, life and death, nature of God, Religious Language
     
  2. Religious Ethics which will include: Normative Ethics, model ethics issues, ethical language, free will and determinism, the impact on Philosophy of Religion
     
  3. Religious Thought which is a new addition and will include: the beliefs, values and teachings of Christianity, sources of religious wisdom and authority within Christianity, practices which shape and express Christian identity, significant social and historical developments in theology and Christianity, key themes related to the relationship between religion and society.

Entry requirements

Students should have a minimum grade of a B in a GCSE Humanities subject (preferably an RE or RS qualification).

Future opportunities

A Level Religion, Philosophy and Ethics will provide you with the skills and understanding necessary to undertake university study. You will be able to critically assess difficult issues which will be suited to study in History, English, Theology, Religious Studies, Law and Politics as well as evaluate competing ideas and the ability to draw meaningful conclusions. Philosophy has become a widely respected subject and today is linked to careers in media, advertising, journalism, teaching, public services and more.
