Science (Applied) BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at John Leggott Sixth Form College

Course description

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science consists of 3 mandatory units plus one further optional unit that provides for a total combination of 60 credits.  The exact units covered may change from year to year, but this is an indication of the likely course structure: 

Core Units:

  • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Unit 3: Scientific Investigation Skills

Optional Unit

  • Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems

At John Leggott College you may choose another two courses in Science or related subjects such asPsychology, Health & Social Care or PE in order to complete your programme. It is quite common for aspiring nurses and midwives to take Health and Social Care as their main programme and supplement it with an additional science subject such as this.

Entry requirements

A GCSE Science qualification at grade C or above or a Level 2 vocational Science qualification (eg BTEC or OCR National) at Merit or above and GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. GCSE average 4.0 or above including 5 C grades.


The course has a mixture of external and internal assessment. Two of the four units are externally assessed. There is some assessment in the form of a 90 minute written examination.

Future opportunities

You could progress into science higher education course or into science or healthcare based training and employment. This BTEC National Extended Certificate would need to be studied alongside another AS/A Level science subject to give you entry on to a degree level science course. Those wishing to do this may be interested in the full Diploma programme, which is the equivalent of 2 A-levels.
