Childcare Level 2 at Calderdale College

Course description

This is a one year programme designed for people who are aged 16 - 18 and would like to work in a supporting role in private day nurseries, education, health authorities, social services and in private homes with young children under the age of 8. They will also spend two days a week on work placement.

Course content

This is a one year programme, designed if you would like to work in a supporting role in childcare settings. You will spend two days a week on work placement, as well as studying a variety of subjects including:

  • Child Development
  • Communication
  • Play and Activities
  • Safeguarding
  • Early Years Settings
  • Health and Safety
  • Functional Skills - all achieved through practical activities and group work

You will carry out practical activities, group work & individual course work. The learners will gain knowledge in College and be assessed on their skills in placement. Teaching will include lectures, practical experience, outside speakers and work placement. The programme is unit based.

Entry requirements

An intermediate course suitable for people aged 16 - 18 who have at least 4 GCSEs at grades D or above including English Language or a relevant/equivalent Level 1 qualification plus Functional/Basic Skills Communications level 1. This could be a CACHE Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children, a City and Guilds qualification, or relevant work experience. The course includes a placement and all students will need to have a clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. The college will apply and pay for this. Applicants will need to supply two satisfactory references.  Interview with specialist tutor where details will be given.

The programme is assessed on four unit tasks, a portfolio of evidence, a satisfactory work placement and reports plus tasks showing competence. There will also be a multiple choice.

Financial information

In most cases students aged 18 and under who wish to enrol on a full time further education course will have their fees waived.  Students who are aged 19 and over and who wish to enrol on a full time course should contact our Student Services Team on 01422-399367 for more information.

Course progression can include:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Educatio
  • Apprenticeship at Level 3 
  • Diploma in Child and Young Peoples Workforce

Career progression can include working in private day nurseries, education, health authorities, social services and private homes in Britain, as well as overseas as a nursery assistant, holiday companies and cruise liners.
