Course content

What does the course include?

The field of computing includes computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, information systems, and information technology. This BTEC National Extended Certificate course includes a broad cross section of units from the field of computing.

Key Features: It is one A Level equivalent recognised by UCAS. Mandatory content (83%).

External assessment (58%).

Course Units: Four units of which three are mandatory and two are external.

• Principles of Computer Science – Mandatory - Written exam - Set and marked by Pearson • Fundamentals of Computer Systems – Mandatory - Written exam - Set and marked by Pearson • IT Systems Security and Encryption – Mandatory - Assignment - Set and marked internally • Human Computer Interaction, Computer Games Development, Mobile Apps Development, Managing and Supporting Systems – A choice of one unit from this category - Assignment - Set and marked internally

Entry requirements

Pathway 2: A combination of A levels and Level 3 Vocational Courses

•        5 A*to C Grades (Merits in BTEC and Vocational Courses) and meeting any subject specific requirements (see below)

Pathway 3: Level 3 Vocational Courses

•        5 A* to C Grades including Level 2 equivalents

Where could this lead?

This course will prepare you to study Computing, Computer Science or one of the many ICT courses in Further or Higher Education.

You may wish to take a more vocational approach and gain a higher apprenticeship.
