Physical Education A Level at Ormiston Bushfield Academy

Physical education offers new and contemporary topics, relevant to today’s sporting world, which will help students of all abilities develop a well-rounded skill set and prepare them for progression to further studies.

As a result, this course complements other advanced level subjects such as Biology, Physics and Psychology.

Course content

Within the course, students develop an understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance.

Key components of the course cover theoretical content such as anatomy and physiology, skill acquisition and sport’s impact on society. Also covered are exercise physiology, biomechanical movement, sports psychology and the role of technology in physical activity.

Entry requirements

Additional entry requirements students must play sport with a local club.

Assessment

Within the course, students develop an understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. Also covered are exercise physiology, biomechanical movement, sports psychology and the role of technology in physical activity.

These components form the basis of the exam paper, which covers 70% of the AS course. The additional 30% is an assessed practical performance module.

In the second year students will build on their developing knowledge from the previous year. Students will be assessed in two separate exam papers both worth 35% of the total A Level course. The additional 30% is again an assessed practical performance module.

Future opportunities

The qualification leads straight into degrees in sports science, sports development, sports psychology, physiotherapy and physical education teacher training.

Other possible career paths include employment in leisure management, fitness instruction and the sports development pathways.
