Chemistry A Level at The Whitehaven Academy

Course description

Chemistry is engaging and interesting and allows you to gain a vast understanding of the world around you.

There are four broad areas of study consisting of:

  • Development of Practical Skills in Chemistry
  • Foundations in Chemistry
  • Periodic Table and Energy
  • Core Organic Chemistry

At A2 level there are an additional two units of:

  • Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements
  • Module 6: Organic Chemistry and Analysis

Entry requirements

Students wishing to take this subject should have ideally achieved a grade B pass, or higher, in Chemistry and one other science OR a B in Science and a B in Additional Science, together with a grade C in English and in Maths.


AS – 2 written examination papers

A2 – 3 written examination papers and a practical endorsement

Future opportunities

If you are thinking of studying Chemistry beyond A level, make sure you get good advice before making your final A level subject choice. Some careers or university courses related to Chemistry will require you to have achieved a full A level or AS level pass grade in a second science subject, most often, but not necessarily, Physics, and preferably Maths.
