Geography AS Level at The Astley Cooper School

Course description

This course is specifically designed to incorporate traditional and contemporary Geography.

Course content

For the AS course you will study Physical and Human Geography and choose from a number of topics, e.g. energy issues, population issues, flooding, etc.

You will also be given the opportunity to attend a fieldtrip to a selected location.

You will follow this course with two or three other AS/A2 levels and, additionally, the compulsory core such as PSHE, RE, PE/Games.

Assessment

This course is assessed through written examinations. There are two exams to complete the AS award. The paper for unit 1 is 2 hours and the exam for unit 2 is 1 hour long.

Unit 1 consists of the Physical Options: cold environments, coastal environments and hot desert environments, and Human Options: food supply issues, energy issues and health issues.

Unit 2 is a geographical skills based paper where Investigation, ICT, Graphical, Cartographical and Statistical Skills are utilised.

Future opportunities

Studying Geography is a good grounding for studying a variety of courses at University. Whilst studying the subject you learn valuable key skills that can lead you on to studying sciences or arts subjects. Ideally, you could continue to study Geography at degree level.

Further information

This course includes a large independent studying element throughout AS and A2 level. When studying contemporary Geography, an understanding and knowledge of topical issues is a key skill to have.
