Computer Science A level at The Mandeville School

Course description

This course is designed with the computer scientist in mind – it combines theory with practical application.

The course will develop a student’s understanding of programming and allow them to experiment, applying theory and demonstrating their competence.

The course is ideally suited to someone looking to pursue a career in IT technical support, engineering or looking to study a Computer Science course at university.

Course content

Students taking this course will learn:

  • Fundamentals of programming, data structures, algorithms
  • Theory of computation
  • Data representation, computer systems and uses of computing
  • Computer organisation and architecture
  • Bid Data, Databases, communication and networking

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C (including Maths, Science and English). Preferably BTEC First in ICT – achieving a Merit or better.

Assessment

80% assessed through 5 exams and 20% non-exam based assessment.
