Applied Business GCSE (Double Award) at Samuel Lister Academy

Course description

This is a very interesting course and is suitable for anyone at all. You will learn about all aspects of businesses and will be relevant at some point throughout your career - whatever that may be!

Course content

You will be learning about all aspects of business throughout the two years of study in Year 10/11. The main topics that you will learn about are:

  • People who work within business
  • Job Roles
  • Recruitment
  • Customer Service
  • How to set up a business

All aspects of the course are very much a part of day to day running of any business, be it an international airport or the local fish and chip shop!

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for Business Studies.  You will choose to do this course as one of your options at the end of year 9.  If you do decide to take the course, you can progress further and do A Level Business where you will learn even more in-depth about how businesses run and the people involved.

In Year 11, whilst learning the relevant subjects you will be going on a trip to see behind the scenes at Manchester Airport.  You will be given the low down of how the airport runs in one of their in-house seminars and then you will go on a tour around the airport and its grounds.  This has been a great success in past years and all students have a great time! they also find it a great help when it comes to actually seeing how a business is run rather that just reading case studies from a textbook.

Future opportunities

Progression to further study (please see 16-19 opportunities) or employment.

Further information

The Vocational Faculty is a new faculty set up to include both existing and new vocational courses in the current climate of developing Applied Learning in schools. At Aire Valley School we currently run successful courses in Business, Health & Social Care, Asdan and Wider Key Skills.

The Eco Project in Year 10 has been very successful and will continue in 2008 - 2009. As a result of their hard work we are setting up a new KS4 B/Tec First course in Horticulture to continue developing the subject and working practically on areas of the school site to improve the school environment. A Poly Tunnel is planned to grow stock and as this new venture becomes established we hope to sell some of the stock and run a small business.

A second new course for 2008 - 2009 is B/Tec First in Retail , covering a variety of areas, including how the retail industry operates, customer services, merchandising, stock control etc . We are intending that students will set up and run their own business at Aire Valley School.
