Performing Arts (Dance) Level 3 Extended Diploma at New College Durham

Course description

You will study the historical context of performance as well as practical units that include rehearsing for and performing in shows. You will take part in workshops and will learn about the performing arts business as a whole. This course will also include units such as choreographing dance, contemporary dance, urban dance and movement skills.

Course content

You will study the following units:

  • Performance Workshop
  • Dance Performance
  • Choreographic Dance
  • Applying Contemporary Dance Technique

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above, ideally including English and Maths but not essential (or an equivalent related qualification). All applicants will need to successfully pass an audition which will test practical abilities in a range of skills and successfully complete course induction. Exceptional entry is available to applicants of all ages with suitable experience and ability.

Past students on the course have attended the following drama schools: RSAMD, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Central school of Speech and Drama, The Theatre School of  Manchester Metropolitan University, Bretton Hall College, E15 Acting School, Dartington College of Arts, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, The Webber Douglas Academy, Italia Conti Theatre School, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Mountview Theatre School, others have progressed onto BA and FdA courses at universities throughout the country.

Examples of professional success include, former National Diploma student, Tim Funnell, in The Royal National Theatre production of "An Inspector Calls" "Tonights the Night" and "Billy Elliot" in Londons West End, Stephen Lamb and Mark Calvert, are members of Northern Stage Theatre Company at Newcastle Playhouse, Ellie Quine who appeared in "Cooking with Elvis" in London's  West End, Hannah Barrie who was a member of the RSC and Brian Lonsdale who is appearing in The Pitman Painters in the West End.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion can also lead to careers as performers, administrators and assistants in a variety of organisations, including community arts associations, arts centres, theatres and other performance venues and arts in institutional care (residential homes, special schools, etc)
