Food and Beverage Level 2 Diploma at New College Durham
This course leads to the award of VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Food and Beverage. Your study programme will comprise of your main programme of study, employability
skills which includes guest speakers, placement, trips and visits to employers within the region and nationally and also competitions.
This qualification will prepare you for a career within some Hospitality and Catering organisations, but is primarily designed as a progression route into Level 3. The aims of the programme are to; provide an educational foundation for a range of careers in the Travel Industry; provide relevant studies for seeking employment; provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development; develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.
The VRQ Level 2 Diplomas in Food and Beverage Service qualification is designed to meet the needs of candidates who want to work in front of house within the hospitality and catering sector. It provides a basis for understanding different aspects of the sector in relation to individual roles and the industry as a whole.
The VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Food and Beverage has been designed in consultation with industry specialists and give a thorough and comprehensive introduction to the hospitality and catering sector.
This qualification will be assessed through practical assessment, multiple choice tests, short answer questions and assignments.
The units that you will be covering:
- Developing skills for employment in the catering and hospitality industry
- Health and safety in catering and hospitality
- Legislation in food and beverage service
- Menu knowledge and design
- Principles of beverage product knowledge
- Service of hot beverages
- Food and beverage service skills
- Handling payments and maintaining the payment point
- Principles of customer service in hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism

In order to access the VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Food and Beverage you will require a minimum of four GCSE’s at grades D or above, ideally including English and Maths, but not essential (or equivalent related qualification), or successful completion of Level 1 VRQ. Those with at least two years relevant industry experience will also be considered.
Successful completion of the course offers you several routes for progression.
- Progression on to the NVQ Level 3 Hospitality and Leadership
- Progression on to the NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery
