Geography AS/A2 Level at Cardinal Newman Catholic School A Specialist Science College
Owing to the wide range of topics Geography is concerned with, our course is split into two main topics: the Natural Environment and the Human Environment.
The first topic includes modules such as Rivers (with local fieldwork), Deserts and Ecosystems: Change and Challenge.
The second topic will explore Population, World Health, World Cities, and Development and Globalisation. Naturally, this course will build on your GCSE work. With the wide variety of modules, some will be compulsory while some are open for discussion with students.
It is impossible to think of ‘doing Geography’ without including a portion of fieldwork. All students will undertake fieldwork at some stage of the A level course. This makes a substantial contribution to the overall grade gained on the course. Students will attend residential field trips in Year 13 to prepare for their fieldwork paper.
If you would like a greater understanding of the real world, a sophisticated sense of place and a deeper understanding of people from other cultures and societies, then this course is for you. Throughout the course you will develop and practice a combination of Key and Geographical skills such as literacy, numeracy, graphicacy, as well as intellectual and social skills.
These skills will help you develop your viewpoint as a Geographer which can contribute to an understanding of issues and problems at a variety of scales and in a diversity of locations.
Fortunately, our Geography Department boasts an extensive library of books and magazines, in addition to those in the main library, thanks to the large investment recently made to provide students with the most up-to-date learning resources.
All teaching resources are also available on the school ‘NET’ so that students can access Powerpoints and teaching materials to maximise independent learning.
5 GCSE’s grades A – C, including C in English & Maths (No Foundation students can do Geography A Level).
