Motor Vehicle - Maintenance and Repair Specialist (IMI) Level 1 at Blackburn College

Course description

This Level 1 in Light Vehicle qualification covers the basic technical needs for todays motor vehicle repair industry. It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in the workshop. You will study in our brand new £5.5 million Regional Automotive Technology Hub. The workshops incorporate a real life garage environment and MOT station where you will work with up-to-date professional equipment on a range of modern vehicles. We have strong links with North West dealerships, including Nissan, Skoda, VW Audi and BMW.

Course content

You will study both the theory and practical aspects of the following:-

  • Light Vehicle Construction and Routine Maintenance
  • Operating Principles of Light Vehicle Engines, Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Operating Principles and Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems and Electrical and Electronic Systems

You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Entry requirements

You will need a suitable Entry Level qualification or 3 GCSEs at Grade E or above (including Maths & English).


You will be assessed by the IMI set practical assessments in the workshop, IMI set on-line multiple choice testing and assessments set by us.

Future opportunities

Most of our students progress to the Level 2 full time course or move onto a Level 2 Apprenticeship, subject to relevant employment.
