BUSINESS STUDIES - AS/A2 Level (AQA) at The Crypt School
2 year course offered as part of a full time study programme
Unit 1: Planning and Financing a Business- Enterprise, generating and protecting business ideas, Business Planning, adding value, sources of finance, types of business, location and people management; financial aspects including cash flow, break even and budgets and so on
Unit 2: Managing a Business – Improving profit, cash flow; workforce planning, organisational structures, recruitment, selection and training, measuring workforce performance; quality, customer service and stock control; effective marketing
Unit 3: Strategies for Success – assessing real world financial, marketing, personnel and production strategies
Unit 4: The Business Environment and Managing Change- impact of change on businesses and how they deal with it, including changes in the economic environment, management, strategy, aims/objectives of the business
In addition to the general Sixth Form entry requirements, a B grade minimum in Maths is required.
At both levels a commitment to personal study outside the classroom is required. Students will be expected to plan their time so that tasks are completed effectively and that deadlines are met.
Your progress will be assessed by your teacher regularly through formative marking, past paper questions, presentations etc.
AS has two modules (case study – all questions are compulsory) that are both assessed at the end of the year in May.
A2 Unit 3 (Case study – all questions are compulsory) and Unit 4 (Essays – two essays from five titles, one essay is based on student’s research based on a pre-release theme from AQA). There is no coursework component – 100% examination based assessment.
The course lays an appropriate foundation for further study of Business Studies, Management or related subjects in higher education. Equally, the material studied would be useful for candidates intending to pursue careers in any area of business (including starting their own business – such as a small enterprise, a small shop owner, dentist, carpenter, architect, accountant, clothes designer, the list is endless.)
Who should apply for the course?
Students considering this option should note that they will be working with numbers, analysing and interpreting information in different forms e.g. accounting documents, reports, tables, graphs and charts.
Research into real-life businesses, group work and presentations are an integral part of the course
