Access to Further Education at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

An Access to FE course suits those who have few or no formal qualifications, or are unsure about educational or job paths and would like to progress onto a further education course in the future.

Course content

This is a one year full time programme. The course includes Functional Skills, as well as Personal Development and Vocational qualifications such as:

- Maths & English
- Personal and Social Development including Healthy Living, Money Management, Career Progression
- Vocational studies where you will have a chance to experience studying in one of the following areas:
- Health and Care
- Art and Media
- Land Based Studies
- Business
- Sport and Public Services
- Hair and Beauty
- Retail and Hospitality
- Construction

Entry requirements

No specific qualifications are required to join the course however, we ask students to take part in an initial assessment to determine if you have the correct level of Maths and English skills.

You will also be asked for a reference.


Assessment will include:

- Course work,
- Assignments,
- Online tests,
- Written exams.

Some parts of the course will be assessed by course tutors and verified by an awarding body.

Future opportunities

The course can lead to a variety of Level 1 vocational courses, to training or employment.

Further information

The course is offered at both sites (Woodlands & Blossomfield). An Access to FE course has been designed specifically for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. They follow the same course but have a specific language input into English sessions by ESOL tutors.

You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.

There may be additional costs for visits throughout the year but these will total no more than £25.

    • Woodlands Campus

      An £8.5 million expansion of our Woodlands Campus now incorporates a new state of the art specialist centre for multi-craft, bricklaying, painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and an expanded motor vehicle training facility. A new sports pitch also enhances the existing sports facilities.

      The new Engineering and Construction facility houses twelve new workshops; six for construction and six for motor vehicle. The rooms accommodate an MOT/motor sport workshop; an engine workshop and further rooms for decorating, plastering and brickwork.

      Woodlands has purpose-built engineering workshops as well as commercial-standard hair and beauty salons. Our IT facilities, learning resource centres and library are also first-rate.

      We also offer a selection of higher education courses at our Woodlands Campus so you can continue your studies with us.

      Via Bus or Train

      The main bus terminal in north Solihull is located in Chelmsley Wood centre. The number 94, 676, 694, 71, 966 and 966A stop at the main terminal with the number 94 stopping on Auckland Drive. The nearest train stations are Marston Green or Water Orton station both located approximately 20 minutes away.

      The College has free car parking facilities on-site.
