Business Studies AS/A2 Level at Balby Carr Community Academy

Course description

The AS qualification is built around 2 core units that allow the students to develop a thorough understanding of business organisations. Business 1 and Business 2 look at how a business is set up and how it organises itself to run effectively. The units also examine the key business functions, marketing, HRM, Operations management and finance.

The A Level qualification looks at similar content to Business 1 and Business 2 for the first 2 units also brings in Business 3 looks at the impact of the external environment on businesses and how they can survive in an ever changing world. It looks at how businesses use strategy and manages strategic decisions in order to survive.

The course also enables students to develop their enterprise and study skills as they will enhance their learning by working in groups, conducting individual research and understanding how to develop business ideas.

3 Decision making to improve marketing performance

4 Decision making to improve operational performance

5 Decision making to improve financial performance

6 Decision making to improve human resource performance

7 Analysing the strategic position of a business (A-level only)

8 Choosing strategic direction (A-level only)

9 Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies (A-level only)

10 Managing strategic change (A-level only)

Entry requirements

The Business Studies course is ideally suited to those who have an interest in business and who have achieved a grade B or above in Business Studies. It is also essential that you are hard working, enthusiastic and able to express yourself well in a written format.

If you have not studied Business Studies before then you will be expected to have achieved grade A – B in other subjects, preferably English, Maths and Science.

Assessment

2 Exams in year 12 and 3 Exams in year 13.

Future opportunities

Students who study this subject may enter many careers. The most common are business management, retail management, marketing and public relations.
