History AS A2 at Bishop Stopford CE School

Course description

In A Level History, you will study the causes and effects of historical change, and the parts played by individuals, groups or great economic and social forces.

It combines well with other subjects, and will lead to a huge range of further opportunities such as humanities related courses at university, and careers in law, museum work, and teaching.

Course content

During Year 12 (AS) you will study 2 modules:

  1. Henry VIII : Authority, nation and religion
  2. The triumph of Bolshevism in Russia.

During Year 13 (A2) you will study two further units:

  1. The United States 1917-1954
  2. Medieval Medicine c1000-1650 (coursework)

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C is the minimum entry requirement, although we recommend an average of 8 Grade C GCSEs.

You do not need to have studied History at GCSE to take this subject at A Level, although previous study is an advantage.


In AS, there are 2 exams

In A2, there is one exam and one piece of coursework.

Financial information

There are no costs for the course. However, visits will carry costs for transport, entrance fees etc..

Further information

The Historical Association holds evening lectures in school, and there may be educational visits organised. Students have previously visited Hampton Court, sites of local historic interest and Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

Whilst all our courses are compatable with each other, the timetable may limit some combinations.
