Art Textiles AS Level at Copleston High School

Course description

This course is suitable for those prepared to complete extensive, consistent coursework. It is a chance to extend your skills and to learn more about textiles as a form of Art. This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to progress to college/university, to pursue a career in the design/ textile industry or those who are keen on embellishment and who are creative.

Both AS and A2 are split into two projects. Unit 1 and 2 for AS, Unit 3 and 4 for A2; units 2 and 4 are externally set by AQA. Throughout the course you will be expected to keep a portfolio and work towards a theme. You will be involved in a variety of practical lessons which build on existing knowledge and also new methods of surface design. The end result for each unit it determined by the pupil and the sketch book is
required to ‘tell a story’ of how the product has been designed and created. The course covers a wide range of Textile areas and will be open to your own interpretation as you develop your own studies. You will investigate various print
techniques, methods of image transfer, fashion, embellishment of cloth, textiles installation and 3D textiles.

Course content

Sessions for AS and A2 are taught together allowing for creative thinking and the sharing of ideas. You will be expected to equip yourselves with sketch books throughout the course and have a selection of art equipment at home. You may find that you will need to buy books and pay for trips and materials.

AS level: Component 1 - coursework portfolio
internally assessed - 60% of AS
AS level: Component 2 - Externally set
assignment (10hrs supervised) - 40% of AS
A2 level: Component 1 - Personal investigation
internally assessed - 60% of A2
A2 level: Component 1 - Externally set
assignment (15hrs supervised) - 40% of A2

Future opportunities

This course is suitable for students who wish to undertake further studies in textiles, art, craft and design, usually at art college or further education, as well as those who are looking to take up careers for which a textiles background is relevant. These might include fashion, footwear, architecture, interior design, surface design, fine art, teaching, theatre and costume design and many more. The course is also suitable for students who have an interest in the subject but do not expect to take it beyond AS Level or A Level.
