Personal Training Diploma & Certificate in Sports Massage Diploma (CYQ) (VTCT) Level 3 at PETROC

Course description

This study programme builds excellence in personal training focused on providing planned personal exercise programmes on a one-to one or small group basis. Anatomy and physiology, nutrition, programming and delivering personal training, health and safety, sports conditioning, business marketing, and outdoor fitness are included in the Personal Trainer Diploma. There may be an opportunity to study for the Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification on the Personal Trainer Diploma; this course is offered on two days per week as part of the Personal Training & Certificate in Sports Massage Diploma.

The VTCT L3 Certificate in Sports Massage therapies covers all aspects of practical sports massage including assessment, postural analysis, sports massage movements, health and safety, set-up of treatment area, consultation and aftercare advice. This course is offered on one day per week as part of the Personal Training & Certificate in Sports Massage Diploma, or as a stand alone qualification

There are also extra curricular opportunities to travel, attend events, learn from guest speakers and additional value added activities

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold GCSE English Language at grade 4/5 or above and preferably GCSE Maths at grade 4/5 or above, amongst the 5 GCSEs at grade C required for entry. 

Entrants not holding a grade 4 in Maths, but who have a grade 2/3, will study GCSE Maths and take the examination at the end of the year. Completing first years will not be able to automatically continue into their second year without achieving GCSE Maths at grade 4.

You must also hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification.

Assessment

Assessment methods for this course are varied but involve planning, teaching and evaluating fitness sessions, production of a portfolio, practical performance, multiple choice theory exams, case studies and oral vivas.

Financial information

There will be a requirement to purchase manuals for some modules, as well as uniform. These will enable you to focus the right knowledge on your practical development and assessment and look professional when doing so

Future opportunities

With this qualification, you can apply for employment as a personal trainer in a leisure centre or health club, or start your own business offering personal training and sports massage. Further study options include Strength and Conditioning, Sports Injuries, Exercise Referral, Exercise Specialist or Pilates Instructor. You could study further programmes in exercise referral or progress to Level 4 qualifications in obesity, low back pain or cardiac rehab.

Other pathways include strength and conditioning or sports therapy. Students can progress to a Degree course in Sport, Exercise and Health some students have progressed from here to university

Q. Do I have to be fit and young to do this course?
A. No, there are elements of the course that do require a general level of fitness, but age is not seen as a barrier. It will be seen as an advantage at interview if you have experience of participation in exercise and fitness.
