Physical Education - AS/A Level at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Would you like a career in the sports industry? This course is suitable for a wide range of students, who may want to work as personal trainers, teachers, 5x60 officers, sport development officers, physiotherapists, sports coaches, leisure managers or other sports professionals. Whatever your goal, the course develops your skills and knowledge to an advanced level and allows you to succeed. It also provides valuable preparation for Higher Education.

AS/A Level Sport (Applied) - Dolgellau and Pwllheli:

  • This is the replacement for AS/A level Physical Education in Dolgellau with an emphasis on the outdoors.
  • This is the replacement for AS/A level Physical Education in Pwllheli with an emphasis on team sports.

Course content

The course is delivered as follows:

  • Classroom and theory work
  • Practical sessions
  • Leadership of activities and coaching sessions.

Entry requirements

  • The minimum entry requirement is 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, to include Mathematics and English or Welsh (1st language). Specific additional entry requirements will be discussed with you at interview.
  • Entry onto the full A Level is based on your performance at AS Level. 

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.


The course is assessed as follows:

  • You will have informal assessments during term, with a variety of practical and theoretical activities
  • Formal assessment for the AS year will involve an examination (50%), a practical performance (30%), coursework (10%), and coaching/officiating (10%)
  • Formal assessment for the A2 year will involve an examination (75%), coursework (7.5%), and practical performance (17.5%).

Future opportunities

Whether you gain the full A Level or just the AS Level, the course adds to your qualifications and helps you to progress. You will gain UCAS points and be able to apply for a range of Higher Education courses at many institutions, in subjects such as Physical Education, Sport Science, Sport Coaching, Sport Physiotherapy or Sport Psychology. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai offers a suitable Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching.

The course also prepares you for a range of careers in the sports industry, creating personal trainers, teachers, physiotherapists, sports coaches, and other sports professionals. Previous students have progressed into sport and leisure related roles, including 5x60 officers, sport development officers, and leisure centre professionals.
