English Literature A Level at Northgate High School

Course description

The Year 12 course focus is ‘Love Through the Ages’, looking at poems, a Shakespeare play, two novels and an unseen prose passage. English Literature AS is assessed by two exams, each lasting an hour and a half. There is no coursework element in English Literature at AS Level. For the A Level there are also two exams, as well as a piece of coursework (20% of your overall grade), comparing an idea, theme or character in two texts that you have chosen, one of which must have been written before 1900. A Level Paper One (three hours), returns to the theme of ‘Love Through the Ages’, while Paper Two has the new focus (and new books) of Modern Literature since 1945. In the latter you will write on poetry, a play and a novel (one written since 2000).

Course content
