Art and Design BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Certificate at Lea Valley High School

Course description

This is a creative subject where you will be encouraged to develop your own pathway within Art and Design. You will achieve this by studying in detail a range of art and design movements from both the past and present to develop imaginative and innovative outcomes.

You will achieve either a pass, merit or distinction equivalent to A Level.

Course content

The Level 3 Subsidiary Certificate in Art and Design is made up of six units. All units include drawing, painting, graphics, working in mixed media, planning projects, carrying out research, designing products and creating three dimensional pieces, making crafts and products like jewellery, items of fashion or furniture, or producing computer based graphics for the web and for publishing.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSE A* ‐ C including Mathematics and English Language at grade C or better
  • GCSE Art and Design at grade B or better or BTEC L2 at Merit or Distinction level


Your work will be assessed through discussion with your teacher, review of your written and visual work by your teacher or peers and presenting your work in class. You will also have the opportunity to undertake visits to museums, exhibitions and colleges where you will investigate the work of historical and contemporary designers.

Future opportunities

As a further study option you could take an Art and Design foundation or degree course in a subject related area.

Some of the career opportunities leading on from BTEC Art and Design are Art Teacher, Design Technology Teacher, Artist, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Computer Games Designer, Visualiser, Photographer, Film Maker, Fashion Designer, Costume and Theatre Designer, Product Designer.
