Course description


The redesigned A level reflects the success and popularity of the structure of the existing A level specification, but incorporates some important improvements. Content structure has been redeveloped to provide a logical and coherent progression for every learner and a smooth transition from GCSE. Units 1 and 4 are intentionally short, enabling learners to be entered from January exams, while the practical exam has been replaced by task-based internal assessment to conform to new QCA requirements.

The specification is divided into chemical topics, each containing different key concepts of Chemistry. Once the key features of a chemical topic have been developed, applications are considered. For assessment purposes, knowledge and understanding of key concepts are treated separately at AS; important links between different areas of chemistry are largely assessed synoptically at A2. While the teaching of practical skills may be integrated with the theoretical topics, they are assessed separately. This allows skills to be developed in a way suited to each centre.

F326: Practical Skills in Chemistry 2

Progression Routes:

Students may go on to university to study a wide variety of courses as chemistry is essential for medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, biochemistry, chemical engineering and hundreds of other courses. It is also extremely useful if you want to study other sciences, especially biology and physics. Professions such as law, finance and accounting value chemistry students as they are usually good problem solvers and communicators.

Entry requirements

The standard entry criteria to study in the sixth form is an 9-4 or A*-C in at least seven different subjects, including mathematics which would usually be at grade 4 or above (equivalent to grade C in previous years).


To study science subjects at A-level (biology, chemistry, physics or psychology), you will be required to achieve at least a 6 grade in additional science or have achieved  6 or above in the individual subject area if taken as a separate science.

What other learning could you do: You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Chemistry such as Biology, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education.With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist.You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
