Sociology AS/A2 Level at Nottingham Academy

Course description

Anyone with an interest in society, the family, education,
criminology, criminal behaviour and the role of religion
in society.

Course content

You will study many aspects of contemporary society including
socialisation, culture and identity. You will look at the role of
the family in shaping peoples’ lives and the impact of
education on the individual and society. You will consider the
role of society in shaping gender differences between men
and women Crime, deviance and criminal behaviour is also an
aspect of study.

Units covered at AS
– Family and households.
– Education with research methods.

Units covered at A2
– Beliefs in society.
– Crime and deviance.
– Theory and methods.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including B grade or above in English.


There are two examinations in each year of the course. Usually
one in January, one in May/June.

Future opportunities

Sociology A level is a useful and relevant preparation for many
degree courses at university such as sociology, criminology,
law, social policy, social work or education.

It can also lead on to many career options such as: teacher,
social worker, prison officer, police officer, care working,
government, local government, Crown Prosecution Service
(CPS), armed forces.
