Sport BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Brownhills School

Course description

The award is suitable for students who enjoy sport but do not want to specialise totally in one area. You will need to have an enthusiasm for sport, both theoretically and practically, and an interest in the broader aspects of sport and leisure.

Course content

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport is a qualification that is directly equivalent to one full A-Level and carries a maximum of 120 UCAS points. In the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport, students will study seven units over two years, covering a range of topics.

These will be:

Year 12

  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport (5 credits)
  • The Physiology of Fitness (5 credits)
  • Assessing Risk in Sport (10 credits)
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise (10 credits)

Year 13

  • Sports Development in Sport (10 credits)
  • Sports Coaching (10 credits)
  • Practical Team Sports (10 credits)

Entry requirements

Admission criteria varies according to the programme. Priority will be given on all courses to students who have an A*- C in English and Maths.


This course comprises of 100% coursework completed in practical and theoretical units. Assignments will be based on realistic workplace situations.

You will be taught by specialist teachers in classrooms and have access to the sports hall, gym, tennis courts, swimming pool, field and fitness room. Projects are submitted for marking on a regular basis throughout the course.

They are assessed internally by your teachers and then moderated by the EDEXCEL exam board. Work is graded and written feedback is provided, enabling students to gauge how well they are doing on the course. Feedback will help to see the strengths of work, as well as allowing students to reflect on areas which can be developed further. Work will be graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
