Biology at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi

Course description

The course provides a wide breadth of knowledge which touches on many varied aspects of a range of topics. These range from the internal workings of organisms in physiology and the interdependence of living organisms in ecology, to social issues including man’s influence on the environment and the ethical considerations of genetics.

The use of a variety of approaches aims to stimulate interest in and promote understanding of biological concepts.

The practical work serves to illustrate and to promote an investigatory approach.

Year 12 Programme of Study

Unit BY1 – Basic biochemistry and cell structure.

Unit BY2 – Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems.

Unit BY3 – AS Practical Biology

Year 13 Programme of Study

Unit BY4 – Metabolism, Microbiology, and Homeostasis.

Unit BY5 – Environment, Genetics, and Evolution.

Unit BY6 – A2 Practical Chemistry

Assessment

Year 12 Assessment

BY1 – Written Exam (1 hour 30 minutes) sat in January 40% of AS / 20% of A level

BY2 – Written Exam (1 hour 30 minutes) sat in Summer 40% of AS / 20% of A level

BY3 – Internal practical assessment 20% of AS / 10% of A level

Year 13 Assessment

BY4 – Written Exam (1 hour 45 minutes) sat in January 20% of A level

BY5 – Written Exam (1 hour 45 minutes) sat in Summer 20% of A level

BY6 – Internal practical assessment 10% of A level
