AS and A2 Level Graphics at William Farr CofE Comprehensive School

Course description

The Graphic Design course is run jointly through Art and Design & Technology. It encourages students to develop their skills and creativity as well as gaining an understanding of materials, equipment and techniques. Throughout the course we develop your knowledge of the history of art and design, and an appreciation for it.

Unit 1 consists of one extended project including packaging, illustration, corporate identity and typography as well as some portfolio pieces. We concentrate on skills as well as cover the full spectrum of elements which feed into Graphic Design. Unit 2 consists of a personal response to a chosen question, through sketch book work and a portfolio, which includes a set 5 hour period as an exam piece.

Students continuing at A2 carry out a Personal Investigation for Unit 3, in their chosen graphic artist or designer which includes sketch book work, portfolio and a written assignment. Unit 4 consists of a personal response to a chosen question, through sketch book work and a portfolio, which includes a set 15 hour period as an exam piece.

Areas of study include; Illustration, Advertising, Packaging Design, Design for Print, Communication for Computer Graphics, Multimedia, Animation, Web Design, Film, Television and/or Video, through digital graphics, painting, drawing and mixed media, including collage, relief, Photoshop, printmaking and screen processes.

If you enjoy drawing, sketching, art, graphics, photography and using the computer to produce high quality images and graphics, then this is the course for you!

We visit local businesses and invite graphic designers to come in and speak. We also take a two day trip to London in Year 12. In Year 13 we have taken a bi-annual trip to New York. In the interim year we hope to visit a European city.

We advise you only take two subjects from Art & Design, and Design & Technology, which includes Art, Electronics, Fashion Design & Textiles, Graphic Design, Photography/Lens Based Design, Product Design.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade B in Graphic Products, Art & Design, Photography or Textiles Technology

Future opportunities

Successful students have gone on to study at University of Leeds, University of Lincoln and DeMonfort University.
