Course description

Why Study Business?

This course enables students to develop an enthusiasm for studying business, providing a holistic understanding of businesses in a range of contexts. Students will develop a critical understanding of organisations and their ability to meet society’s needs and wants. They will also understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives

They will become aware of ethical dilemmas and responsibilities faced by organisations and individuals. Students will acquire a range of relevant business and generic skills, including decision making, problem solving, the challenging of assumptions and critical analysis. They will also be required to apply numerical skills in a range of business contexts.

Students completing this course will gain an understanding of core business concepts and apply them to a variety of business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Breadth and depth of knowledge is developed when applying more complex business information requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

Features of the Course:

This course is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers*.

Theme 1: Marketing and people and Theme 2: Managing business activities, provide core knowledge of business concepts.

Theme 3: Business decisions and strategy and Theme 4: Global business, provide a wider range of concepts and more complex business information.

Progression from this qualification can lead to higher education courses such as business management, accountancy and finance, human resource management, marketing and tourism management. Alternatively,careers in banking, sales, general management, working in the public sector organisations or charities.

Assessment in Year 12

Examinations: Paper 1: Marketing, people and global business (2 hours)

Paper 2: Business activities, decisions and strategy (2 hours)

Examinations: Paper 3: Investigating business in a competitive environment

Entry requirements

In order to enrol on sixth form courses, applicants will need to have achieved:

  • 5 A* to C Grades in separate subjects including English and Maths.
