Drama & Theatre Studies A-Level at John Port School

Course description

AS: There are 2 units. Unit 1 requires the study of 2 set texts and a theatre practitioner. You will be assessed in practical exploration work and your written notes. Additionally, you will be required to write an evaluation of live theatre. In Unit 2 students perform a teacher-directed performance to a visiting examiner. They will also perform a monologue or duologue. This will be supported by a written performance concept evidencing understanding and development of the work.

A2: The A2 course builds on work completed at AS level with a further 2 units. Unit 3 is a group devised project. It is assessed in performance and in exploration notes. The final unit, Unit 4, is a written examination based on your directorial ideas for the production of a play studied. You will also be asked to write about a play you have seen and compare it to the original performance conditions.

Entry requirements

In addition to the general entry requirement for the Sixth Form, the minimum requirement for the AS course is a GCSE grade B in Drama, or Merit at BTEC. If Drama was not taken at GCSE or BTEC level, entry would be by audition, subject references and relevant Drama experience outside of school.

Future opportunities

This course would be useful for anyone looking for a career in the Arts or Media. However, the skills of teamwork, communication, creativity and resilience which are essential in Drama are valued in most employments.
