Electrical Installation Level 2 Diploma at Oaklands College

Course description

1 year Full Time available at Smallford Campus. This course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge required to complete the qualification to Level 2, in preparation for progression onto a Level 3 qualification. It will arm you with a electrical qualification which will support your search for work within the electrical industry.

Course content

An introduction to the basic techniques and methods of different wiring systems used in the electrical installation industry. This is workshop based and involves working with a range of different wire and enclosure types. Applications of electrical science, Motors, magnetism, single and poly phase power are all aspects of the electrical installation industry and understanding the working principles of these is a part of an electricians training. Circuit and installation calculations. An electrician must be able to calculate the way a circuit or an installation is going to operate before any wiring begins. This is to ensure the installation methods and circuit components are safe and will operate correctly both under normal running and fault conditions.

Entry requirements

An interest in working in the electrical installation industry. An aptitude for practical skills. Grade C GCSE in English and Maths.

Want to go into the electrical installation industry. Begin your training on the Level 2 Technical Certificate where you will gain a recognised qualification required in the electrical industry. To become a qualified electrician requires a full Technical Certificate both the Level 2 and Level 3 components, the NVQ Level 3, which is a site-based qualification and the AM2 which is a three day long practical exam. Generally this all takes a little over three years to complete. For 16 to18 year olds and apprentices, the Level 2 course will also produce portfolios of Key Skills work to show future employers.


The Level 2 Electro technical Certificate in assessed through four on-line exams covering Health and Safety and Principles of Electro technology. Towards the end of the course there are two practical assessments carried out under examination conditions. For Key Skills you will be required to complete a portfolio and undertake an on-line multiple choice test.

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Electrical Installation you can continue your studies on a Level 3 Technical Certificate in Electrical Installation.
