Sport BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Christ The King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The course consists of 4 units which all include both theory and practical elements. These units are:

  • Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology
    Learners will be examined on their knowledge of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems and the effects of exercise on each system.
  • Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-Being
    Learners will work on a pre-release task (part A) to conduct research on a given scenario over 6-8 hours. Two weeks laterr, the supervised assessment session (part B) will be released. Learners will then take their research notes into a supervised assessment session where they will be issued with supplementary stimulus information building on the scenario from part A. Learners will have 2 hours under supervised conditions to respond to the assignments set to interpret the lifestyle factors and data provided to justify a programme that meets the need of the client. 
  • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry 
    Learners will cover the career and job opportunities in the sports industry, explore their own skills using a skills audit to inform a career development action plan, undertake a recruitment activity to demonstrate the processes that can lead to a successful job offer and reflect on the recruitment and selection process and their individual performance.
  • Unit 4: Sports Leadership 
    Learners will cover the roles, qualities and characteristics of an effective sports leadre, examine the importance of psychological factors and their link with effective leadership, and explore an effective leadership style when leading a team during sport and exercise activities.
    The quality and depth of understanding shown in assignments and the online exam will be awarded with a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. A Pass is roughly equivalent of an AS/A Level Grade E, a Merit is a C, a Distinction is an A and a Distinction* the equivalent of an A*.

Entry requirements

Route 1 - not available

Route 2 - a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or BTEC/OCR at Merit or above

Route 3 - a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or BTEC/OCR at Merit or above

Assessment

  • Unit 1: Externally assessed unit via an online examinatino (90 minutes) worth 90 marks
  • Unit 2: Externally assessed unit, 60 marks available
  • Unit 3: Learners will produce 2 assisgnments and each will be assessed internally by CTK PE staff to Pass, Merit or Distinction standard.
  • Unit 4: Learners will produce 2 assignments and each will be assessed internally by CTK PE staff to Pass, Merit or Distinction standard.

Future opportunities

This course provides a valued qualification for progression into further training in the sports/leisure industry as a sports coach, fitness instructor, lifeguard and related careers such as sports massage, acupuncture etc, 

It is also a great stepping stone to enter higher education to train as a teacher, physiotherpist, nurse, sports therpist, chiropracter etc. It is also an advantage if looking for employment in the sports leisure industry at the end of Year 13.
