Sociology AS level at Lord Grey School

Course description

Sociology is a wide-ranging academic subject which investigates aspects of the social world and examines issues of inequality and privilege, considering different views of the effect of such issues on the broader society.

Success in this subject is dependent upon a mature approach towards, and a sound knowledge of current affairs, and the ability to analyse and to produce coherent extended responses to a variety of materials.

Course content

Students will study issues related to facets of society such as the family, the media, crime, education and the world of work. Learners will also investigate the ways in which data is collected and analysed. Sociology is valued as a discipline in careers in the Uniformed Services, the Civil Service and the Health and Social Care professions, as well as others.

Entry requirements

A*-B grade in English GCSE + A*-B grade in Maths or Science GCSE.


The A2 assessment covers all the material from AS and A2 modules. Three written papers of two hours each contain structured and extended response questions covering theory and practical skills.
