Functional Maths (Level 1&2) at New College Swindon

Course description

This course can be a preparation for GCSE Maths or a route onto the majority of traineeships/apprenticeships. 

The approach is different from GCSE as you are required to use your maths skills to solve everyday problems.  On this course you will acquire the transferrable skills you need to cope with the world of work and everyday life.  This will involve working with large numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, data handling and measure, shape and space.

  • Brushing up on basics
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percentages
  • Ratio
  • Area, perimeter, volume
  • Measurement – length and capacity
  • Representing and interpreting data (charges and graphs)
  • Averages
  • Probability

Entry requirements

Most people starting the course will have Grade E or F at GCSE Maths or you may have studied an entry level of key skill qualification, we also welcome applications from learners who have not previously achieved in maths.  You will undertake a short assessment at the beginning of the course to help decide what level you are going to aim for.


One exam of one hour thirty minutes, calculator is allowed and encouraged.

Future opportunities

A qualification in Functional Maths will be the key to entry into employment, training and other college courses and qualification pathways.
