Hairdressing (Level 3) Diploma at New College Swindon

Course description

This level 3 qualification is designed to develop an extensive knowledge of salon health & safety, client care, consultation and communication skills. You will be able to develop your creative side designing hair styles, creative colour designs and precision cutting whilst working on clients in a realistic working salon and have the opportunity to take part in external events, competitions and industry week to help enhance your CV.

You will be based in Distinction Salons within the college to implement a full working salon with paying clients where you will cover all aspects of hairdressing at this higher level.

The qualification provides opportunities for those with intentions of progressing into employment, freelance work or to a level 4 qualifications within the sector.

Course content

You will complete the course over one year with much of this time spent developing your practical skills in our dedicated hairdressing salon. You will also learn the essential underpinning knowledge for each unit.

The units include:

  • Hairdressing consultation support for colleagues
  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Cut women’s hair to create a variety of looks
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practise in the salon
  • Promote and sell products and services to clients
  • Creative hairdressing design skills

You will also undertake the level 2 award in Salon Reception duties as an additional qualification during the course and be expected to undertake salon duties to support health, safety and security assessments throughout your course.

Entry requirements

You must have a Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing and hold a minimum of 5 grade C GCSE’s including English and maths. We welcome applications from adult learners with prior subject knowledge at the required level and from those who wish to refresh their skills and may include a trade test to determine prior learning.

You should have a genuine interest in working in the Hairdressing industry. As part of the course you will practise all services with other learners, so you should be prepared to take part in giving and receiving all hair treatments. You will be expected to meet the high standards of personal presentation and demonstrate a professional manner and appearance as required by this industry.

You will be encouraged to find work experience in a commercial salon to help you demonstrate competency, build on your classroom performance and develop your industry skills.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed mainly through a portfolio of practical and written work. Some units will require you to sit an on-line exam to show knowledge of the unit. You will work closely with your tutor, who will regularly check and discuss your progress.

All practical assessments are carried out in Distinction Salons where clients pay for their treatment and services. This is a dedicated realistic working environment. Please be aware to support your qualification aims some units may require you to bring in models to practise specific treatments prior to assessment.
