Carpentry and Joinery Advanced Apprenticeship at Colchester Institute

Course description

This course is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to become a successful site carpenter or bench joiner. Learning through practical and theory sessions at the College is teamed with work-based experience and training in order to achieve a Level 3 Diploma alongside an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry or Joinery

Course content

This course links basic craft training and first line supervision giving the opportunity to progress to a supervisory role. There is an emphasis on maintaining quality standards and the overseeing of operations. This course builds on the skills achieved from the NVQ level 2 and covers:

  • Basic Craft Training and First Line Supervision
  • Maintaining Quality Standards and the Overseeing of Operations
  • Either Site Work or Bench Work

Site work includies:

  • Complex Structural Carcassing
  • Inclined Roofs with Hips, Valleys and Eaves Finishing
  • Waste Disposal Procedures to Meet Legislation

Bench work includes:

  • Detailing and Manufacture of Complex Joinery Products
  • Joinery products which Include Single or Double Curved Components
  • Waste Disposal Procedures to Meet Legislation

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 2/GCSEs in English and maths.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have completed an NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry or Joinery. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the work based learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement with a Carpentry or Joinery company.

Future opportunities

Career pathways may include supervisory or management roles.

Possible progression to professional qualifications including the CIOB first-line supervisors scheme. Higher education opportunities may include the Certificate of Higher Education in Construction, or Foundation Degree in Construction Management at Colchester Institute.
