Course description

Working in the Public Services can provide a truly satisfying career, especially if you enjoy working with people in a varied, exciting working environment. Our Public Service courses will suit you if you are highly motivated and are looking to combine classroom-based study with practical applications in the community.

The course provides a realistic introduction into developing the skills and qualities needed to pursue demanding but highly rewarding jobs in any of the public services.

Course content

This is a 2 Year course, which is 100% coursework. 3 Units will be studied in each year.




Unit 1Government, Policies and the Public Services. This unit enables pupils to understand the process of developing government policies and how these policies influence the public services.


Unit 2Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services. In this unit, pupil will have the opportunity to develop a knowledge of leadership style and an understanding of teams and teamwork activities within the public services.


Unit 8Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on the Public Services. Pupils will learn the impact of war and conflict on UK public services, how the public services deal with terrorism both within the UK and on the international scene.


Year 13


Unit 17Police Powers in the Public Services. Pupils will look at the police have to arrest and question suspects.


Unit 3Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services. The unit is designed to develop an awareness of rights and responsibilities and respect for different religious, ethnic and national groups within UK society.

Unit 5Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services. This unit gives learners the knowledge, understanding, skills and practical experience to be able to prepare for entry into the uniformed public services.

Entry requirements

Pupils to have achieved a 4 in English.


Over 2 years, 6 Units are studied and assessed through coursework some of which will be practical and will involve visits to the local Fire Station.

Future opportunities


This is an exciting course that opens up opportunities in later life for access to join the Police force or employment in other public sectors. It provides UCAS points to help those pupil wishing to apply to University.



Upon successful completion of your course, you can expect to be fully prepared for a career in the Police Service, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Prison Service, British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Customs & Excise or Local Government
