Agriculture - Level 2 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

This course is an introduction to the agricultural industry. Learn about working in the agriculture industry and develop the skills you will need in employment and for further learning. You will undertake some theory sessions that will allow you to better understand what you learn on practical sessions, farm duties and work experience.

A feature of the course is the range of visits we undertake, to a range of organisations, farms, shows and demonstrations e.g. LAMMA.

Throughout the course your work is constantly assessed with some formal time constrained assessments/tests as required.

Additional qualifications are offered to those learners at the commencement of their programme, these may include rough terrain fork lift truck operation, ATV training, tractor driving as well as health and safety in agriculture, but charges will apply.

It is envisaged that students will visit our partner college farms at Newton Rigg to study both upland and lowland agriculture, different farming systems in both high and low rainfall areas and alternative land production systems.

Entry requirements

Level 2 Study Programmes:

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) or above to include 2 from English, Maths and Science with at least a grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) in the remaining subject.

Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1 

Assessment

Assignment work involving practical and theory elements.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of this course, at a minimum of Merit level, you have the opportunity to study a Level 3 in Agriculture. An alternative study route would be to continue your studies on Work-Based Learning pathways.

Careers: Jobs as stock people, tractor drivers, machine operators and general farm workers or countryside skills occupations such as hedge layers, drystonewallers, pest controllers and fence builders.
