Complementary Therapies Level 3 Diploma at Strode College

Course description

Health and medical practices from across the world which have been used throughout the 10,000 years of human history.

This one year course leads to a recognised qualification in complementary therapies and is suitable for students who wish to work in a complementary therapy environment such as cruise ships, spas, health farms or self employment.

You will study in-depth: Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology; Aromatherapy; Reflexology; Body Massage; Principles and Practices for Complementary Therapy; Health, Safety and Hygiene; Reflective Practice; and Business Practise for the Complementary Therapist. Work experience will be arranged by you and your teacher towards the end of the year. This is a valuable and important part of the course and you will be encouraged to go to health spas and complementary clinics both locally and nationally.

There will be guest speakers featuring topics such as alternative medicine to give you first hand industry experience. There will also be trips including The Clothes Show Live. You will visit local care homes to provide complementary therapies to residents with a variety of conditions and you will have opportunities to work with paying clients in our Beauty Salon in a supported and supervised arrangement.

Course content

Principles and Practice for Complementary Therapies
Understand the key historical factors and theoretical background of Complementary Therapies through research and presentation as well as related legislation and role of Complementary Therapy associations and regulatory bodies.

Business Practise for Complementary Therapist
Understand the key business criteria required for Complementary Therapies.

Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology
Extensive knowledge of the organisation of the body through in-depth study of all the bodily systems to include related pathology.

Provide Aromatherapy
Students will learn to blend and use a variety of essential oils and apply massage techniques to meet client needs.

Provide Body Massage 
Students will learn to prepare for and provide body massage treatments using a wide range of techniques and skills.

Provide Reflexology
Students will learn the techniques used to apply treatment to feet and hands.

Reflective Practice
Students will carry out self reflection and its impact on personal growth and practice, and identify key strengths and limitations in their knowledge and understanding as a developing therapist.

Entry requirements

Students must be 17 years old with 5 GCSEs grade A-C. This course is an ideal progression route from Beauty Therapy Level 2 or Level 3, Health and Social Care Level 3 or Complementary Therapies Level 2.


You will be assessed through externally set written tests, practical observations over the year, extended assignment work and an extensive range of case studies over each of the three practical skills areas, many of which are required to be completed outside of college. You will also complete a reflective diary. VTCT Exam Board.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course could lead to employment in the complementary therapy field or progression onto higher education. Recent students have progressed into employment at local exclusive spas, self employment and higher education to study Sports Massage and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
