Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma at Amersham and Wycombe College

Course description

This course is designed for those who are interested in working with children, young people, young adults and older adults in a Health or Social Care environment. The course is also suitable for people with a caring aptitude, flexible and who are adaptable to the challenges of a diverse culture.

Course content

You will study a number of units which include practical activities and encourages you to enjoy and achieve. You will need to pass all eight mandatory units and achieve at least 180 credits overall in order to gain the full qualification. Mandatory units include; developing effective communication in health and social care, equality, diversity and rights, development through the life stages, fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, sociological and psychological perspectives for health and social care. Other units studied might include: nutrition for health and social care, health education, complementary therapies, infection prevention and control, counselling, medication , anatomy and physiology, caring for children and young people, dementia care and vocational experience for health and social care. You will be encouraged to develop a range of skills, techniques and personal qualities essential for successful performance in either Higher Education or working life.

Year 1 course = 90 credit Diploma
Year 2 course = a further 90 credits providing in total a 180 credit Extended Diploma

Entry requirements

4 GCSE's at Grade C or above one of which must be English or Maths OR successful completion of a Level 2 qualification including a pass at English and Maths.


There will be a variety of assessment methods including; written assignments, presentations, research, case studies, controlled assessments, portfolio and projects, plus assessment in the work place.

Financial information

Stationery, a USB stick, art and craft materials such as card, glitter or fabrics for creative activities. It is advisable to purchase one or two essential course books, others can be borrowed from the library.

Future opportunities

The qualification is equivalent to A Levels and will also give UCAS points for entry into university to study health, child care or social care subjects, or enter into employment in these fields.
