AS Level : Sociology at English Martyrs Catholic School

Course description

This Sociology course has been designed in order that students acquire the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods, together with a range of skills.

AS Sociology is a separate qualification and the following topic areas are studied.

  • Education
  • Sociological methods in context of education
  • Sociological research methods
  • Families and households

Entry requirements

Students embarking on this course must demonstrate an interest in current affairs and have 5 GCSE passes including English grades C and above


AS examination consists of two papers each accounting for 50% of the marks, each examination lasting one hour thirty minutes.

There are also regular in class tests and assessments to prepare students for the final assessments.

Students will also be expected to carry out mini presentations, work in teams and support peer learning in class.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Sociology, which could lead you onto higher education in one or more of the Social Sciences such as Sociology, Development Studies, Anthropology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Sociology and people such as a Social Worker, Teacher, Social Researcher or a more general position working within the Social Services. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the health and social care sectors.
