Design Technology: Systems & Control at Lancaster Girls' Grammar School

Course description

System and Control encourages students to take a broad view of Design and Technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between Design, materials, manufacture and marketing.

The course will provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of investigative, research, analytical, modelling, designing and making skills that can be applied when solving problems.

The emphasis of the course is on the application of knowledge. It is intended that students will have the opportunity to learn through practical activities by producing multiple solutions to problems.

Course content

Unit 1

Materials, Components and Application

50% of AS, 25% of A level

2 hour Written Examination

80 marks

Theory covering Electronics, Mechanisms & Pneumatics 

Unit 2

Learning Through Designing and Making

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

Coursework: approximately 50 hours

80 marks

Electronic design portfolio and Manufactured outcomes, consisting of 3 mini-projects:

  • Project 1 Monitor Design
  • Project 2 Counter Projects
  • Project 3 Robot Project

Unit 3

Design and Manufacture

2 hour Written Examination

84 marks

Design Examination

Unit 4

25% of A level

85 marks

Designing and Manufacture Practice

Coursework approximately 60 hours

A full independent design and make project of your choice

Entry requirements

We do have a minimum requirement of five grade Bs or higher at GCSE. English Language (minimum Grade C) is also required. There are also entry requirements linked to most AS subjects (usually grade B or better). Admission to Year 13 is currently set at 3 grade Ds from your AS results.
