IT Users BTEC Diploma – Level 1 at Dudley College

Course description

Inspire and enthuse learners to to confidently use electronic systems such as e-mail, the web and understand the safety issues surrounding Internet usage. Also develop learner's basic skills in word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, desktop publishing packages and increase awareness of general software fundamentals. This will lead to preparing the learners for a L2 qualification in digital technologies.

Course content

This course is ideal if you want to develop a career in the field of ICT but currently have no formal qualifications.
During the course, you will study:

• IT software fundamentals
• Spreadsheet software
• IT communication fundamentals
• Using the internet
• Using email
• Internet safety
• Design software
• Imaging software
• Website software
• Improving productivity using IT
• Desktop publishing software
• Word processing software
• IT user fundamentals
• Presentation software.

You will also study:

• Functional skills in maths and English
• Employability and personal development.

Entry requirements

GCSE grades at D to G. Due to the low entry qualifications all students are required to have an interview with the course tutor prior to being accepted.


You will be assessed by assignment work for each subject area.

Financial information

There is no need to worry about the costs of coming to college as there is lots of financial help available. Our finance and welfare officers will be able to talk to you about any help that may be available to you based on your individual circumstances.

Bursary fund



Students aged 16-18 attending a full-time further education course can apply to the 16-18 Bursary Fund for help with college related costs. More information about the 16-18 Bursary Fund can be found at the website: or by contacting our Student Finance team on 01384 363 555.




We will provide a free bus pass to help with travel costs for 16-18* year olds on full-time programmes, based on individual circumstances**. To qualify for a free bus pass***, you must live more than one mile from the campus at which you will be studying and not already be in receipt of other financial support, such as Care to Learn funding.


*Under 19 as at 31 August 2017.


**Students with learning difficulties or disabilities who are unable to access public transport may still be able to receive help – talk to our Student Finance team.


***Evidence of family income will need to be provided.
